Constanta (pronounced con-STAHN-zuh) is the oldest city in Romania and was first established by the Greeks in the 7th century BC as Tomis. It was renamed Constanta by the Eastern Romans. As one of the largest ports in Europe, it is a commercial hub. Just to the north of the city is a large beach resort area known as Mamaia, very popular with Europeans. The city has remnants of its classic period at the outdoor Archaeological Park and on Ovid Square at the National History and Archaeology Museum. Just behind the Museum are a set of massive Roman mosaics which have been preserved.
In the region around Constanta are the ruins of the Greek city of Histria, the Roman monument at Tropaeun Traiani, built to commemorate the Roman victory over the Dacians in 109 AD, and the UNESCO Heritage Site on the Danube delta near Tulcea. Many will want to travel to the capital city of Bucharest which features the massive architecture of the Communist era.
