Ravenna is a classic city of northeastern Italy that became important during the last days of the Roman Empire and the early days of the Byzantine Empire. During this period many early Romanesque churches and buildings were constructed. These simple and often small buildings are renowned for their mosaics which earned the city UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Connected to the Adriatic by a canal, the city gives visitors the typical Italian welcome. Nearby are the medieval towns of Ferrara to the north and Cesena to the south. Ferrara is surrounded by walls containing beautiful structures from the 15th and 16th centuries, including the Castle Estense. Cesena has what is claimed to be the oldest library in Europe with ancient manuscripts on display. The vibrant university city of Bologna offers all you would expect from an historic city filled with young people.
