Key Attractions: Matsesta Spa, Stalins Dacha, Tea Plantations, Michael Archangel Cathedral, Arboretum, Dolphinarium, Riviera Park, Krasnaya Polyana, Caucasian State Biosphere Reserve
Sochi replaced Crimea's resort areas like Yalta as Russia's most popular Summer beach area. The Winter Olympics were held in Sochi and Krashnaya Polyana in February 2014, so significant development of facilities and transportation has occurred since Donna and I were there in 2006. Even the cruise port was renovated to prepare for the event. Besides the popular beach resorts, the other attractions in the area include spas, parks and tea plantations. The most famous building in the city is the Michael Archangel Cathedral. There is also a lovely Arboretum (Dendraray Botanical Garden) featuring flora typical of the region. The most famous attractions in the area are the Matsesta Spa, with it neo-classical architecture and traditional baths and treatments, and Stalin's dacha, surprisingly austere and featuring a wax replica of the infamous dictator sitting at his desk. The region is also the home of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Caucasian State Biosphere Reserve, the most pristine of all European forests and home of a number of unique species of flora and fauna.
Tours of the 2014 Olympic facilities including Krasnaya Polyana are still under development, but should be available by the summer and fall cruise season of 2014.

Visa requirements: Cruise passengers visiting Russia (72 hours or less) do not need to get a visa as long as they work with a licensed tour guide. However, you must make your arrangements prior to arrival since the tour guide has to provide your information to the authorities. Cruise lines often advise that you must take their tours in order to avoid the visa process, but this is not correct. If you want to wander independently you will have to get a visa. Additional information can be found at http://www.russianvisa.org/index.html .
